World-Class Support Tools and Programs

The xSeries 305 server comes with a number of tools and programs that make ownership a positive experience. From the start, IBM has programs to help you purchase a server, get it running, and keep it running over the long haul. IBM can help your company maintain ownership of technology leadership servers.

  • One-year warranty on parts and labor with limited warranty with next-business-day service (same-business-day service optionally available) protects your investment if a problem occurs.
  • The ServerProven™,6 program lets you confidently configure your server with various devices and operating systems. This Web-based program provides compatibility information from actual testing of the xSeries 305 server with various adapters and devices.
  • The ServerGuide CD library includes online publications, utilities, and drivers that assist you in loading of popular network operating systems.

Product Positioning

xSeries 305 servers are attractively priced, ultra-thin, rack-mountable platforms. They are positioned as the entry 1 U servers of the xSeries rack-optimized product line.

The xSeries 305 offerings are positioned beneath the xSeries 330 server. The xSeries 330 server is also contained in a 1 U high form factor, but has higher amounts of performance capacity with SMP capability, scalability, and systems-management functions that may not be required in all applications. The xSeries 305 server is a cost-effective solution for these applications.

These uniprocessor Pentium 4-based servers are designed for installation of features to handle future expansion. At the same time they can handle emerging applications that require high-performance, uniprocessor computing power and excellent functionality in the least amount of rack space. These applications include:

  • Web caching
  • Front-end Web serving
  • Server farms
  • Telecommunications
  • Active Directory services

These powerful servers also meet traditional enterprise network server requirements, but with the added benefit of requiring less space.

Note: Additional support, certification, and version information on network operating systems can be accessed at:

Compatibility: The xSeries 305 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS (BIOS modified to IBM specifications) is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

To view detailed information on the Internet about IBM and non-IBM devices, adapters, software, and network operating systems supported with xSeries servers, enter:

Contact your IBM representative, Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

Limitations

  • The xSeries 305 servers support a maximum of 4.0 GB of system memory by adding a 1GB PC2100 CL2.2 DDR ECC SDRAM DIMM in each of the four DIMM slots. Remove original DIMMs. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access (DMA). These servers support 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB 133 MHz 72-bit double data rate (DDR) PC2100 ECC SDRAM Registered DIMMs. All supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system.

Refer to the Planning Information section or our compatibility Web page for supported memory options.

  • To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the xSeries 305 server requires a rack with a perforated door.

  • Processor upgrades are not supported.

  • Use the version of ServerGuide that is shipped with the system, or a later version, to load software and drivers. Earlier versions of ServerGuide will not be compatible with the server.

Refer to the Software Requirements section for operating system limitations.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: The xSeries 305 server is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with system.

Configuration Information

Bay Configuration: The xSeries 305 server contains four drive bays. Two bays contains the standard 1.44 MB, 3.5-inch, slim-high diskette drive, and the slim line standard CD-ROM drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high bays located side-by-side on the lower front section of the server support various EIDE or SCSI HDD installation.

Cabling — EIDE Configurations: The xSeries 305 server contains two integrated ATA-100 EIDE controllers. One controller is cabled directly to the 24x-10x IDE CD-ROM. xSeries 305 models that include a standard EIDE HDD use the second EIDE controller to attach the standard HDD. This controller supports up to two EIDE HDDs through the use of a two-drop cable.

Cabling — SCSI Configurations: xSeries 305 SCSI models contain a single-channel, Ultra160 SCSI adapter. A two-drop, 16-bit LVD SCSI cable is attached to the internal connector of this adapter to support one Ultra160 HDD. The second drop can be used to attach a second SCSI HDD.

Rack Installations: xSeries 305 1 U, rack-drawer models are designed to be installed in a 19-inch rack cabinet designed for 26-inch deep devices, such as the NetBAY42 ER and NetBAY42 SR or NetBAY25 SR.

If using a non-IBM rack, the cabinet must meet the EIA-310-D standards with a depth of at least 28 inches. Also, adequate space (approximately two inches for the front bezel and one inch for air flow) must be maintained from the slide assembly to the front door of the rack cabinet to allow sufficient space for the door to close and provide adequate air flow.

Power Considerations: The xSeries 305 server includes a standard 200 W power supply. This power supply is capable of providing sufficient power to run the server fully configured with supported devices.

Cable Orders: The dual 10/100/1000 Mbps, full duplex Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with the xSeries 305 server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provide a 10BaseT, 100Base-TX, or 1000Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.
